Wild Geese is a chamber ensemble and concert series founded by flutist Sara Traficante and pianist Erika Reiman.  Based in Hamilton, Ontario, we are launching in March 2018 and look forward to an exciting first season.

Our inaugural concert, on Friday March 16 at Hamilton’s First Unitarian Church, features a rising star, the stunning Turkish-Canadian mezzo Beste Kalender.  We follow up in June with world premiere performances of Peter Thompson’s chamber opera Ubu Roy in Hamilton and Toronto.

Ubu Roy

Staircase Theatre, Hamilton.  A new opera by Peter Thompson based on the surrealist play by Alfred Jarry.  Featuring Peter Thompson, Julia Morson, Domenico Sanfilippo.  Christine Chesebrough, violin; Gordon Cleland, cello; Erika Reiman, piano.

The group’s name comes from a beloved poem by Mary Oliver.  Her work, refreshingly direct yet evocative and stimulating, resembles the kind of musical performances we want to present in Hamilton.  Oliver writes:

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

The poet here evokes a rich, untidy, mysterious world that includes us all.  We believe that classical music is for everyone, and should also include the voices of people from diverse cultural backgrounds, genders, sexualities, and socio-economic strata, people of various ages and educational levels.

Wild geese have their own personalities and are not bound by the strictures of domestication, as a farmyard goose might be; yet they still instinctively know how to cooperate with one another by flying in a V formation as they migrate.  Similarly, our chamber ensemble is comprised of musicians with strong individual personalities that are nevertheless able to work together seamlessly, producing a distinctive whole.
